2016 Statistics

Students

  • A total of 29,074 students (18,421 undergraduates and 10,653 postgraduates) enrolled at UCT in 2016.
  • Currently there is a near-even split between women and men in the student body, with women comprising about 51% and men 49% at undergraduate level. At postgraduate level men represent 51% and women students 49%.

International students

  • There are over 5,278 international students at UCT, from 112 countries (39 from Africa, 2,661 students are from SADC countries), this number includes postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows and Semester Study Abroad (SSA) students,
  • UCT’s international full degree students come from about 112 different countries.

Academic Staff and Research

  • There are presently approximately 1,179 members of academic staff spread across the university’s six faculties and the Graduate School of Business (GSB).
  • The university is home to the majority of the country’s A-rated researchers - academics who are assessed by their peers as being world leaders in their fields; assessment is administered by the South African National Research Foundation.
  • 18% of the country’s SARChi Chairs (nationally funded research chairs) are held at UCT.
  • UCT is the alma mater of five Nobel laureates.
