UCT honoured the memory of veteran stalwart, Chris Hani In recognition of his contribution to South Africa’s democracy, and in commemoration of his life and legacy.

New Vice-Chancellor for UCT

“Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, currently the deputy vice-chancellor for research and internationalisation at UCT, has been appointed by Council as the new vice-chancellor of the university with effect from 1 July 2018. Professor Phakeng will take over from Dr Max Price, who has held the position since 2008.”

The 2018 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings published in June 2017, holds UCT at its previous ranking of #191. Under this ranking, UCT remains as the top university in Africa.

UCT Rises in Global Rankings to 112th place

The 2017 Best Global University rankings are out, and the University of Cape Town (UCT) has risen dramatically in rankings. With a leap of 50 places, the university is ranked 112th globally and 1st in Africa. Other South African universities have also moved up on the list. This, one of many worldwide global rankings, is based on research reputation and performance.

Online courses can bring the world into Africa’s classrooms

Read the journey of creating and presenting a UCT Massive Open Online Course, or MOOC. MOOCS have become very popular globally, but remain rare in Africa. “The MOOC, Medicine and the Arts: Humanising Healthcare, kicked off in March 2015. It attracted more than 8000 students from more than 100 countries and seven continents… The MOOC featured seminars by medical doctors, artists and social scientists.”

Autism expert’s brainwave diagnostic breakthrough
