Professor Njabulo Ndebele had been invited to participate in the 2004 International Festival of Authors at Harbourfront Centre with other writers of renown. He had been asked to read from his most recent book,* The Cry of Winnie Mandela*. In the invitation to alumni for the event it was pointed out that the work has been praised as “remarkable and singularly courageous” by Barbara Masekela, and Antjie Krog remarked how “for so many decades South Africans have been thirsting for this text.”

The luncheon, attended by 100 alumni, also provided an opportunity for Professor Ndebele to talk about changes and exciting initiatives at UCT and update the alumni on their alma mater and answer questions about UCT ten years after democracy in South Africa.
