FRANCIS WILSON USA LEGACY SOCIETY LECTURE TOUR - University of Cape Town, Regional Office Canada

Francis Wilson USA Legacy Society Lecture Tour
Dinosaurs, Diamonds & Democracy

Tues, 18 November 2014 : Boston
Wed, 19 November 2014 : New York
Thurs, 20 November 2014 : Washington DC

If you are travelling to the States in November, you may want to take in the Legacy Society lecture tour of its President, Emer. Prof. Francis Wilson.

DINOSAURS, DIAMONDS & DEMOCRACY

EMER. PROF. FRANCIS WILSON, President of the UCT Legacy Society and well-known to so many, will be conducting a three-city USA tour to meet with alumni and present his engaging lecture on Dinosaurs, Diamonds & Democracy

Save these Dates:
Tuesday, November 18th, 2014 - Boston (7.00 – 9.00 pm)
Wednesday, November 19th, 2014 - New York (6.30 – 8.30 pm)
Thursday, November 20th, 2014 – Washington DC (6.30 – 8.30 pm)

An asteroid the size of Table Mountain crashed into what was to become South Africa over 2 billion years ago, marking the spot. The country’s history since then has always been robust and full of energy. Francis Wilson’s Dinosaurs, Diamonds & Democracy takes you in record time from that moment, when the earth’s richest gold reefs were shaped, to the advent of democracy in 1994, another event that stunned the world. Along the way you will encounter some of the most ancient dinosaurs on record, the very first people on the planet, and the first cultures. You will see outsiders moving in to reshape history: hunters and gatherers, cultivators and herders, iron-workers from the north, and immigrants from Europe and Asia. They fought and made peace; they stumbled upon gold and diamonds; they rose to the heights of excellence and sank to the depths of oppression, until on one day they all queued as equals to elect a government. That is the story marked by dinosaurs, diamonds and democracy.

Please save the date! More info on venue etc. to follow soon.

The production is powerful, explicit and cutting edge.

The program :

Theatre:  “Ubuntu” (The Cape Town Project)

April 2012 | British Columbia

Theatrefront (Toronto) and Western Canada Theatre present “Ubuntu” (The Cape Town Project)

Theatrefront (Toronto) and Western Canada Theatre present “Ubuntu” (The Cape Town Project).

This is a collaborative theatre project that started at the Baxter Theatre Centre in 2007. It had a successful run in Cape Town, came to Toronto, and Halifax in 2009 and now comes to the west coast. Acclaimed South African actors Mbulelo Grootboom (UCT alum) and Andile Nebulane have been with the project since its inception. The production centres on an experience we have all had in changing countries and trying to adapt to our new environment. In true South African style the production is physical and traditional. It is presently on stage in Calgary until Saturday, and then from March it takes to the stage in BC. After a successful season in Calgary and northern BC, it opens at the Firehall Theatre Centre in Vancouver on 12st April 2012. I would highly recommend this production.

The producers have offered a special discount to UCT alumni, call the boxoffice t 604 689 0926, and state you are a UCT alumnus to receive your discount, or inform the boxoffice when you buy your tickets on the evening that you are from UCT to qualify for the discount..

Perinatal Mental Health Alumni Breakfast - University of Cape Town, Regional Office Canada

Perinatal Mental Health Alumni Breakfast

7 March 2009 | TORONTO

Dr Simone Honikman, Director of the Perinatal Mental Health Unit, was in Toronto attending and presenting two papers at the”Expanding our Horizons: Moving Mental Health and Wellness Promotion in to the Mainstream” conference. She agreed to present her work to alumni at a special breakfast held on Saturday 7th March 2009.

During March 2009, Dr Simone Honikman was in Toronto attending and presenting two papers at the”Expanding our Horizons: Moving Mental Health and Wellness Promotion in to the Mainstream” conference. She agreed to present her work to alumni at a special breakfast. 14 alumni were present, the majority from the medical fraternity. The event included a discussion session after the presentation.

The Perinatal Mental Health Project (PMHP) addresses an epidemic of mental distress among women living in adversity in South Africa. Mental healthcare is a notoriously neglected area – even more so in “healthy” pregnant and postnatal women. The focus on the physical to the detriment of the emotional is particularly felt now against the backdrop of HIV and AIDS. The PMHP provides training of healthcare practitioners, and the screening and counselling of pregnant women in distress.

Should you wish to receive more information, or to contribute towards this project, please contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)at the Foundation offices.

Opening Night of “Tshepang” - University of Cape Town, Regional Office Canada

Opening Night of “Tshepang”

18 February 2009 | Toronto

“Tshepang”, by renowned South African playwright, Lara Foot Newton, performed in the Studio Theatre, Harbourfront Centre, Toronto, to alumni and friends.

What the critics have said about Tshepang:
* “If you only see one show this year, Tshepang demands to be the one — superbly written and perfored” — Sunday Independent (South Africa)
* “This searing and compassionate, powerfully acted play — is a committed act of remembrance” — The Stage, London
* “There’s a richness and subtlety in Lara Foot Newton’s script that has not been seen in South African new writing in recent years” — Jane Edwardes, Critics’ Choice, Time Out – London

Dr Marcia Blumberg organised a special Opening Night event for “Tshepang” on the evening of 18 February 2009.

Dr Blumberg presented a pre-production talk on the play, and a post-show reception was held where the guests were able to talk to the cast and crew.

This event raised $3 660, which was donated to the University of Cape Town’s Baxter Theatre Centre in support of the Ikhwezi Community Theatre Festival. This festival, which has been running for the past 11 years, coaches new artists, writers, and directors for weeks prior to their productions being set up and performed in the mainstream professional theatre environment of the Baxter. For many, this is a stepping stone to a professional career in theatre.
