Response to Vice Chancellor’s Challenge Annual Appeal

January 2009 | Spring 2009

The response to the Annual mail appeal distributed in November by UCT has been promising. Funds raised from this appeal will go towards the Chancellor’s Challenge Scholarship awards. This campaign has been running for the past five years, and the 2008 appeal draws the campaign to a close.

Scholarships awarded through the Chancellor’s Challenge will be valued at R20 000 ($2 667) each. For some students, this could fully cover their fees. For others, a loan component and also a family contribution will cover fee expenses. With funds presently raised, 230 Chancellor’s Scholarships can be awarded. 30 awards will be made each from 2009 until all the funds are utilized. The award of the scholarship would be renewable subject to specific criteria, with a maximum of 30 awards being made each year. This will allow for a spread of almost eight years with the present fund balance. The Foundation’s mid-year newsletter will carry the names of the scholarship recipients.

In the spirit of the Chancellor’s Challenge, all scholars will sign a pledge committing to become donors to UCT themselves once they have graduated.

We offer our thanks to those who have contributed to this bursary appeal. Our thanks goes to those who have renewed their support each year – thank you for your continued support; and also to new donors – we hope you will consider making this as an annual contribution to give a young person the opportunity of the ‘UCT experience’.
