Henry and Marcia Blumberg awarded Vice-Chancellor’s Medal

April 2011 | Spring 2011

Henry and Marcia Blumberg were honoured recently in Toronto with an award of the Vice-Chancellor’s Medal for their unstinting support of UCT over the years. The University of Cape Town Foundation was constituted in Toronto in 1993 with the intention to raise funds for student bursaries, health sciences and educational outreach projects, and create a link between the University of Cape Town and Canada. A lot of work went into establishing the Foundation as a registered charity in Canada, making it tax effective for UCT alumni to donate to their alma mater. Henry and Marcia Blumberg were a moving force behind the establishment of the Foundation.

Over the years, the Blumbergs have hosted many functions in their home and organized many dinners and events in Toronto. They have played host to visiting academics and many a Vice-Chancellor. Visiting South African theatre performances were regularly linked to alumni events as a vehicle to raise additional funds for bursaries. Of note was support of a Masters in Drama Scholarship related to theatre, performance or applied drama/theatre in HIV/AIDS, awarded to renowned South African theatre playwright, Mike van Graan.

Funds raised from a theatre evening in 2008 contributed towards the Ikhwezi Community Theatre Festival held annually at the Baxter Theatre Centre. This annual festival has helped identify a number of promising new young artists over the years.

Henry and Marcia have also contributed to the Blumberg Law Prize for Service to the Student Community. Established in 2007 this prize is awarded annually to a student who has worked hard both academically and in service of the wider student community.

Marcia and Henry have also been instrumental in initiating and bringing to fruition a formal exchange agreement between UCT and York University, Toronto.

At a luncheon held recently at an elite venue overlooking Lake Ontario in the heart of downtown Toronto, Vice-Chancellor Max Price extended UCT’s most sincere thanks to Henry and Marcia for their contributions over the years to the University and to its continued success.

Max Price also took the opportunity to thank past Board members of the UCT Foundation as well as staff members of Blumberg Segal LLP who have played a supporting role in the University of Cape Town’s activities in Canada.
