Food Security @ UCT

September 2019 | Fall 2019

Who would have thought that food security would be an issue at UCT?

Due to socio-economic factors beyond their control, we have discovered that many students at UCT go hungry every day. This issues is often hidden and stigmatised. The Food Security Program hopes to break the stigma and provide food for those in need.

UCT students recently undertook a phonathon amongst alumni in South Africa to assist their fellow students who go hungry to class every day.

After a flash email appeal, Canada alumni quickly joined in supporting this program. The appeal is still open if you want to contribute and help feed students who have given their all to get to UCT, and are working hard to succeed - often living on one cup of soup a day.

600 packed lunches are provided to students on all UCT campuses daily, with student volunteers ensuring distribution across campuses.

Although 600 lunches are provided daily during term time, we think the numbers of affected students is much higher. It presently costs $3.20 per student per day. Think of what a donation of $50 or $100 could do. The aim is to raise funds to cover providing 600 lunches for 80 days (during term and exams).

Located in the Department of Student Affairs, the required Finance due diligence and procedures apply. The Food Security Task Team was set up as a University Student Affairs task team, chaired by Professor Loretta Feris, to strategise and explore models and good practices for the future – one such model being explored is food vouchers to be distributed in 2020.

Let’s make a difference to those lives that can be changed through their experiences at UCT and by the support of fellow Alumni.
